Born in Turin, the city where the first espresso machine was introduced in 1884, Sorso began with a simple reflection on coffee and the rituals that surround it. Before talking about portable coffee machines, it is worth asking a more fundamental question: why does coffee matter so much to us?
More than Coffee
Coffee is one of the most widespread daily rituals in the world.
For some, it marks the beginning of the day. For others, it is a break between tasks, a moment to slow down, or an excuse to step away from a busy routine. Preparing coffee takes only a few minutes, yet those minutes often become a small space reserved for ourselves.
The value of coffee is rarely limited to the drink itself. The aroma, the preparation, the waiting, and the first sip are all part of an experience that millions of people repeat every day.
A Reason to Meet
Coffee has always been a social ritual.
Across cultures, a cup of coffee becomes a reason to sit down together, start a conversation, exchange ideas, or simply spend time with other people. Whether in a café, at home, at work, or outdoors, coffee creates moments of connection.
Many of our most meaningful conversations happen around a cup of coffee. Not because coffee is extraordinary, but because it gives us a reason to pause and be present.
Why Portable Coffee Matters
The growing popularity of portable coffee machines reflects a simple idea: people want to bring their rituals with them.
A portable espresso machine is not only a tool for making coffee while traveling. It is a way of preserving a familiar experience wherever life happens. Whether in the mountains, on a train, in a workshop, at a festival, or during a camping trip, coffee remains a reason to stop, connect, and enjoy the moment.
The Idea Behind Sorso
The goal was never simply to design another portable coffee machine. The ambition was to explore how a portable espresso machine could become more personal, customizable, repairable, and meaningful.
Developed in Italy through 3D printing, experimentation, and continuous prototyping, Sorso explores how design can support the rituals people care about most.
Bringing the Ritual Further
As the project evolves, the question remains the same.
How can we bring the coffee ritual beyond the kitchen, beyond the café, and beyond the places where we usually experience it?
Sorso is one possible answer: a 3D-printed portable espresso machine designed to accompany people wherever they choose to go, while keeping a small piece of home close at hand.
